15 Benefits Of Meditation For Human Life

Meditation helps a person achieve a sense of contentment by just being in his/her skin and enjoying every bit of it without being envious or greedy about anything external to our physical self. As human beings, we get so caught up in the rat race, where we keep on striving for more and more,

Without realizing that the moment we achieve what we were striving for, it only gives us a temporary high, and then we are back to square one again.

Following are the benefits of meditation for human life.

1. Meditation Reduces Stress

One of the most well-known benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress. When you’re stressed, your body releases a hormone called cortisol. Meditation slows down your heart rate, decreases blood pressure and breathing, and increases the amount of blood flow to your brain. It also reduces the levels of stress hormones in your body.

Why Meditation Is Important

2. Meditation Relieves Pain

In a University of Montreal study, researchers compared the effects of meditation to morphine on pain. In both cases, participants said they felt less physical and emotional pain. However, MRI scans showed that while meditation did not reduce the experience of pain, it reduced how much your brain reacted to the pain. Meditation also reduced anticipatory anxiety about future pain.

3. Meditation Makes You Smarter

Meditation has been shown to increase the thickness of the cortex, which is the part of your brain associated with intelligence, creativity, and memory. A study published in Neuroimage showed that long-term meditators had a thicker cortex than those who didn’t meditate.

A study published in Behavioural Brain Research found that meditation increased the fluid intelligence of participants, which is the ability to adapt to new challenges and think abstractly. Additionally, several studies reported that meditation enhanced participants’ cognitive performance and academic achievement.

4. Meditation Improves Concentration

One of the brain benefits of mediation is improved concentration. When you meditate, your breathing slows down and becomes more regular while your heart rate decreases. This creates a state of calmness that allows for an increase in attention span.

You can also take up meditation to be able to focus better and perform better on tests.

Meditation can lower your blood pressure by slowing heart rate and breathing. One study found that Transcendental Meditation helped improve cardiovascular functioning in African Americans with mild hypertension.

Other studies also report that meditation has a positive effect on blood pressure and heart health. Transcendental meditation daily for three months resulted in clinically significant reductions in blood pressure.

7. Meditation Lowers The Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. But meditation can help lower your risk of heart disease. A study published in the journal Circulation found that transcendental meditation was able to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease.

8. Meditation Makes You More Compassionate

Scientific studies consistently show that meditation has a positive impact on empathy and compassion. One study published in the journal Emotion showed that after eight weeks of mindfulness meditation training, participants had increased levels of compassion for others.

9. Meditation Helps You Overcome Addictions

Another common benefit of meditation is that it can help to overcome addictions. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry found that mindfulness training helped reduce smoking, alcohol use, and drug use among adults.

10. Meditation Improves Behavioral Problems in ADHD Patients

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder characterized by impulsivity, hyperactivity, and difficulty paying attention. But meditation can help ADHD sufferers improve their behavioral symptoms.

A study published in the European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry studied children with ADHD and found that Transcendental Meditation reduced their symptoms of inattention.

11. Meditation Improves Your Memory

Meditation increases your ability to concentrate, which means you can pay more attention to what’s going on around you. It also makes you more self-aware and aware of others, which helps you remember information.

A study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition reported that Zen meditators had an increased awareness of their surroundings, were better at remembering things, and stayed focused longer.

12. Meditation Helps You Sleep Better

Sleep is an important part of our overall well-being, and it can be difficult to get enough quality sleep. Meditation can help you fall asleep faster because it helps reduce stress. One study found that mindfulness training helped reduce insomnia in older adults.

13. Meditation Helps You Detoxify Your Body

When your thoughts are busy and your mind is constantly racing, it’s difficult to relax. But one of the benefits of meditation is that it allows you to take a break from all the noise and chaos. During this time of rest, your body can detoxify and heal itself.

A study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives showed that mindfulness-based stress reduction can improve biomarkers of detoxification.

14. Meditation Helps the Brain Stay Healthy With Age

As you age, your brain begins to lose its ability to function as effectively as it once did. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience found that an eight-week mindfulness meditation course helped improve the cognitive performance of older adults.

15. Meditation Boosts Your Immunity

Stress and anxiety can weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to illnesses. But meditation can help boost your immunity. A study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity found that mindfulness meditation was able to increase antibody levels in the body.

Importance Of Meditation – Conclusion

Meditation has many benefits for your mind, body, and spirit. It can help you relax, sleep better, improve your memory, boost immunity, reduce stress, overcome depression and anxiety, be more compassionate to others, stay focused on the present moment instead of thinking about the past or future.
