In a world where billions of people are malnourished, programs that promote farming and provide supplies to farmers may help improve the food security situation in some areas.
This article lists 15 reasons why farming is important, taken from many different angles including but not limited to: environmental, economic, social justice, public health, and animal rights.
15 Benefits Of Farming Everyone Should Know
Farming is one of the oldest professions in the world, but this doesn’t mean it is not important anymore. On the contrary, farming remains necessary for several reasons. Here are 15 reasons why farming is important and why it is still a vital industry today:
1. Farming Brings About Food Security
Farming ensures food security at a national level by providing safe and nutritious food to all people. It also reduces malnutrition by producing crops specifically meant to provide nutrients that many people lack such as Vitamin A, iron etc.
In addition, farming helps ensure environmental sustainability by protecting natural resources such as water and soil from pollution and degradation that would endanger human life if left unchecked.
2. Farming Helps Feed The World
There has been an increase in the global population and there is a need to ensure than everyone gets their meal. This is because, it takes about 1,000 liters of water to produce one liter of milk and 2,500 liters of water for cultivating 100 grams of potatoes. There are also some parts of the world that suffer from famine and such crops help feed such people.
3. Farming Helps Preserves Water
Water is needed by every living thing on this planet and through farming we can ensure cleanliness as well as preservation of ground water. Through irrigation techniques we can preserve our underground reservoirs for future generations; if they don’t exist then preserving the land becomes a challenge.
4. Farming Helps Preserve Our Soil
It is important for us to protect the land which we farm because if we don’t do that then there will be no room for farming and all the future generations would starve to death.
Because soil helps in growing food, it needs to be taken care of. If there is no crop than the land will turn barren and erode easily because of exposure to sun and wind. The land becomes infertile and unusable.

5. Farming Helps Preserve Wildlife
It is through farming that we can prevent people from poaching animals for meat as well as hunting them for trophies. We also help preserve other species such as birds which might otherwise not have a place to live due to deforestation or pollution caused by excessive urbanization.
6. Farming Provides Local Jobs
People living in agricultural areas need employment opportunities that are available locally. These jobs should include everything from planting seeds at the beginning of the season, then watering them throughout, harvesting them at the end of the season and taking care of livestock.
7. Farming Prevents Pollution
People living in agricultural areas are not exposed to dangerous fumes that come from factories because they do not exist close by.
The land is well maintained, kept clean and free from any harmful chemicals which might otherwise seep into water sources if it were polluted. By having fields that produce their own fertilizer farmers can help reduce pollution even further.
8. Farmers Can Be Self-Sufficient
When communities become self-sufficient they no longer rely on other people for survival; this way they don’t risk starvation if there is a war or conflict with other nations as well as being prepared for droughts which are common in some parts of Africa due to climate change.
The self-sufficient community is less likely to be involved in other crimes such as drug trafficking or human trafficking.
9. Farming Provides Food For Others
If the local community becomes self-sufficient than it doesn’t need to look for places where they can obtain food, this means that other communities which are unable to provide their own food due to droughts or other reasons can benefit from what is grown locally.
For example, there are some areas that produce vegetable oil and may sell to nearby areas which do not have enough oil sources. This way people who aren’t able to provide for themselves will at least get one of the basic requirements for survival, i.e., food.
10. Farms Provide Economical Fuel
In most parts of Africa crops such as cotton, sugar cane and maize are used to make bio fuel. These fuels are much cheaper than other sources that can be found in nearby countries or regions where they might not even have an oil refinery.
11. Farming Helps Those Who Need It Most
Farmers’ markets that revolve around organic farming provide a sustainable way for people to get the food they need while supporting local farmers so they can continue the cycle of planting and harvesting crops.
Buying from them is more affordable than importing food from large wholesale suppliers and this helps people who cannot afford imported food or don’t want to deal with shipping delays.
12. Farming Reveals The Truth About GMOs
Many critics of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) claim that it will ruin agriculture in Africa. However, there has been evidence that some types of GMO foods such as BT-cotton might help solve problems such as pesticide use which will ensure the safety of fields where crops are grown for other people to eat.
Sustainable farming practices such as this might help improve the lives of many Africans and other developing countries.
13. Farming Provides Education
The work ethic which is learned at a young age by working on a farm will stay with children throughout their lives, they learn how to plan and prioritize tasks, manage time and use resources effectively.
There are also some schools involved in sustainable agriculture which teach students about safety and responsible land management while encouraging them to attend school while helping out on the farm after hours; this teaches them that an education is important but how it works best alongside practical experience.
14. Farming Takes Advantage Of The Climate
Some crops are better suited to certain weather conditions, for example maize is able to grow in the dry season while during the wet season it is better suited for cotton which requires more water.
Many African farmers are also learning how to use wind energy by building wind mills that pump water from deep wells or catch rainfall in large tanks.
This helps them provide drinking water for livestock but can also be used to irrigate their fields if there isn’t enough rain. Farms that produce crops year-round will always have something growing.
15. Farming Is A Job Opportunity
Farming provides an opportunity for people to work hard and learn new skills that can be used in completely different fields if they choose. Jobs tend to be safe as well especially with the use of tools designed for farm work, many farmers are also very open to hiring anyone who is willing to help out.
The Importance Of Farming – Conclusion
Farming is important because it provides people with food, opportunities for education and jobs while ensuring that the surrounding community has access to basic necessities. It also allows people to come together and work towards a common goal which benefits everyone in some way or another.
